
In December 2023, ASASI conducted its 3rd Youth Peacebuilding and Leadership Camp for disenfranchised diverse youth from disadvantage areas in urban, rural and interior region of Sabah
Day 1 focused on Mental health and design and critical thinking exercise and open discussion session on intergenerational trauma and effective and creative communication and challenges faced by young people in terms of freedom of expression in difficult areas. The session aimed to establish peace with themselves as an individual and inner self.
Day 2 focused on the theme of climate change and environmental protection and the Sustainable Development Goal and community based creative activities. The session aimed to provide peace with their surrounding and nature with oneself and importance of setting youth leadership on the important issue of climate change and environmental protection as people of Sabah.
Day 3 focused on the theme of human rights and women’s rights and to set the participants to establish peace with fellow humans despite the differences and past prejudices and hate based environment. Session also focused on gender-based violence and women’s right and anti-discrimination. A film on Women Leadership and crisis management was shown and discussed with the moderation of mentors as a follow up activity.
Day 4 focused entirely on prevention and countering violent extremism and terrorism and hate crime and the role of young people to prevent and monitor their peers on it with greater focus on online radicalization and rural youth exploitation.
Day 5 focused on Inter religious dialogue and importance of racial and religious harmony as well as dialogue with Deputy Director of Bukit Aman E8 Unit of the Royal Malaysian Police, Nik Ezanee on role of youth as peace builders and to prevent exploitation of radical and terror-based elements from the region.
Day 5 focused on democracy, politics and creative activism and leadership building and inter communal solidarity and bonding.
Final day focused on creative activism and the arts workshop and social media output on peace messaging.
