Conservation of Riparian and Watershed of Upper Menggatal
River, Kg. Kokol, Menggatal: An Integrated Approach Towards Sustainable Ecosystem

The project aims to tackle the deterioration of the ecosystems at the Upper Mengatal River base caused by unsustainable land use practices and the underutilization of effective watershed and riparian management for clean water resources and other forest ecosystem services, such as nature-based tourism, which could benefit the local economy. The lack of effective intervention in managing these areas poses a risk of biodiversity loss, disrupts hydrological balance, compromises water quality, and diminishes the ecosystem services that are essential for both local communities and wildlife.

The project strategy focuses on an integrated approach that merges conservation efforts with community participation and sustainable nature tourism. This may include protecting forested areas within the watershed, especially the riparian zones along riverbank, engaging local stakeholders in conservation education, and promoting sustainable nature tourism and other development practices that support sustainable environment.

The project is rooted in the understanding that healthy riparian and watershed areas are vital for maintaining ecological balance, enhancing biodiversity, and supporting local livelihoods. By employing an integrated approach, the project aims to ensure that conservation efforts are effective in safeguarding the environment while also being economically and socially viable for the community. This dual focus strives to create resilient ecosystems capable of enduring environmental challenges while providing real benefits to the local population.

The project also integrated strategy aligns with the GEF/SGP’s commitment to holistic ecosystem management, aiming to enhance environmental sustainability, strengthen community livelihoods, and conserve biodiversity in the area. It emphasizes the importance of community involvement in conservation efforts, empowering local communities, and highlights the significance of fostering the local economy through well-managed nature tourism initiatives and social inclusion.
